Once the sow/gilt is close to farrowing (giving birth), they are put into a farrowing pen so that we can keep a closer eye on them. We community raise piglets until 6 weeks, so they get to have buffet milk from all the mamas.
The Evaluation Process
We start breeder evaluation from birth and every 2 weeks until they leave for new farms. We pay close attention to the physical features of each piglet and their temperament. Those that don't meet breed standards are known as "feeders" and those that do meet standards are known as "breeders".
At 6 weeks, they are weaned, wormed, vaccinated and male feeders are also castrated.
